The Ministry of Health says advice issued by health units yesterday urging pregnancies to be postponed, was not focused on the government benefitting.
Media Spokesman of the Ministry Specialist Dr. Hemantha Herath said the request was made purely considering the risk expectant women face owing to the coronavirus.
Speaking at a media briefing today, Dr. Herath said taking the request into consideration is left to the discretion of the public.
He noted that as specialists they are expected to express their opinion, adding though it is not the view of the Health Ministry, the request was made in earnestness.
Dr. Herath said it was not a forced order.
Dr. Hemantha Herath was meanwhile questioned over the continuously high numbers in COVID-19 deaths reported daily.
Dr. Herath added a majority among the deaths in the past were unvaccinated individuals, adding that with more individuals being vaccinated the likelihood of vaccinated persons being among the fatalities is also high.
However Dr. Herath said they expect a drop in the number of virus-related deaths in future.
Dr. Herath added the programme to administer the Pfizer vaccine to individuals travelling overseas is currently underway.
He said the Pfizer vaccine is being administered in all districts especially to youth leaving for studies and other individuals travelling for employment.
