Consultant Physician at the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Upul Dissanayake says the present COVID-outbreak in the country is similar to a Tsunami wave.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau today, Dr. Dissanayake said the country is experiencing a peak point of a COVID-wave adding the spread will cease soon.
When questioned by media over community spread, he said the current outbreak is evident of a community spread adding the situation is dire as opposed to statistics that have been recorded.
Dr. Dissanayake added statistics are relatively as many patients are not being hospitalised, are not testing, or are cured within two to three days.
He said there have been instances of an individual contracting the coronavirus twice adding it is possible for an individual to contract the virus multiple times.
Dr. Dissanayake said despite individuals having received the booster dose, they could still contract the coronavirus, adding that the risk would be less if vaccinated.
Furthermore, Dr. Upul Dissanayake said complications arising from the Omicron variant are less likely adding that three out of 10 Delta variant infections displayed severe symptoms.
He said receiving the booster jab is essential in mitigating the spread of the virus.
Dr. Dissanayake added if an individual from a single family contracts the coronavirus, it is considered that other family members have also been infected irrespective of testing.
He claimed however medical advice must be sought before reaching any conclusions as other diseases are also prevalent in society
