Police have arrested a toll booth operator of the Southern Expressway entrance in Gelanigama who is accused of allegedly stealing Rs.1.4 million in cash.
Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said the Panadura Crimes Investigation Unit arrested the individual yesterday.
The toll booth operator is accused of stealing Rs. 1,418,500 on the 11th of September.
Police said the suspect was found to be in possession of Rs. 384,000 of the stolen cash.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had stolen money from the tollbooth since last August in order to pay off his debt.
Police said the individual was addicted to gambling and had therefore stolen the money.
He will be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court today.
