The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka says they are disappointed over the government’s decision to further ease health regulations, despite the country being at high risk of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to media today, Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said there is a serious concern as to whether the Director General of Health Services and other health officials considered current COVID-related data or were influenced by another individual when reaching a decision to issue the new set of health guidelines.
Rohana warned the coronavirus pandemic in Sri Lanka would soon escalate further due to the relaxation of travel restrictions and quarantine regulations and the irresponsible behaviour of the public during the festive season.
He questioned the practicality of the decision to further ease travel restrictions and quarantine regulations at a time when individuals confirmed to be infected with the Omicron variant is increasing.
He claimed there are a higher number of infections reported at ground level, as opposed to official data being reported through media.
Rohana said health sector employees and the public are aware of the situation adding a complicated situation has arisen due to the large number of cases reported from state and private institutions and schools.
He said it is evident that the decision to relax restrictions was reached at an unsuitable time.
