The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Union warns that the Omicron variant has become the most dominant strain in the island.

Speaking to media, Union Chairman Upul Rohana said the government, nor health authorities have an interest in controlling the infection rate.

He said the ground level situation in Sri Lanka is worsening as the public is ignoring health rules and mask wearing.

Rohana added case numbers were much higher than those reported by authorities.

He also stressed that citizens have disregarded directives to obtain the booster jab under the assumption that the pandemic has passed.

Chairman Upul Rohana added the government and the public have lost interest in upholding health and safety guidelines issued by authorities.

Therefore, he claimed the task of controlling coronavirus infections has become the sole duty of PHI and Medical Officers of Health.

Rohana said the only exit strategy left for the public was to hope for herd immunity.

He warned the country was heading towards a major catastrophe due to the Omicron variant.
