The opposition says Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a deadly COVID-19 crisis due to the mishandling of the pandemic by the government.
Speaking during a media briefing, Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka said Sri Lanka’s death rate is increasing at an alarming rate where thousands are dying while according to projections a million people will get infected by the novel coronavirus, if the current trend continues.
MP Champika Ranawaka said the country is at the brink since the Delta coronavirus bomb will explode shortly.
He said at present, dead bodies are piling up at hospitals while people are dying along roads, in vehicles and at residences.
MP Ranawaka noted that although the government is attempting to downplay the situation, according to professionals and international experts, the country is heading towards a major disaster with the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant.
He said the government should step aside and let the experts in the field handle the crisis and bring the situation under control like it happened during the first wave.
MP Champika Ranawaka said although the government has named the coronavirus clusters, as Welisara, Minuwangoda, Peliyagoda and New Year, all such clusters should be renamed as the Rajapaksa cluster, since the COVID clusters emerged in the country due to the actions of the leaders of the government.
