The Sri Lanka Medical Association says it has been confirmed that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads 70 times faster than the Delta variant.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Chairperson of the Association Dr. Padma Gunaratne said the number of coronavirus infections could likely rise with the increase in large gatherings.
Dr. Gunaratne said between 500-700 COVID positive cases are identified with around 20 virus-related deaths also reported daily.
She added in the days ahead with the festive season, gatherings are on the rise adding that Omicron being reported in the country could also pose a risk of cases increasing.
