The Association of Health Professionals says coronavirus policies and guidelines of the Ministry of Health have repeatedly been proven to be ineffective.
President of the Association Ravi Kumudesh said the discovery of 160 new cases with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is a clear indication of this shortcoming.
Kumudesh said the process of conducting COVID testing on passengers is a burden on the country.
He said many arrivals are detected to have tested positive upon leaving the country, adding that conclusions can be derived that many Omicron cases are entering the country.
Kumudesh added that while such a development is preventable, the government has failed to carry out testing on arrival.
He noted that such shortcomings will subsequently lead to quarantine processes which is a tedious task.
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura identified the Omicron variant in 160 individuals after testing 182 biosamples.
A majority of the samples were obtained from individuals at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
