The Government Medical Officers Association says although several weeks have passed since the administration of the booster dose began the numbers receiving the vaccine have reduced due to the lack of communication.
GMOA committee member Dr. Prasad Colombage speaking at a media briefing yesterday said the previous interest among the public to obtain the vaccine has waned.
He claimed that with the drop in COVID-19 cases the public also disregarded the seriousness of the pandemic.
Dr. Colambage added the Ministry of Health and the government failed to encourage citizens to obtain the booster vaccine as well.
He said coronavirus cases and deaths are now once again on the rise stating that the spread of the virus was controlled owing to a successful vaccination drive.
Meanwhile, Dr. Prasad Colombage said the process of following health guidelines is today limited to merely wearing a face mask.
Dr. Colombage said state and private institutions have failed to diligently follow health guidelines adding that in the event another COVID-wave is reported, all citizens will be held responsible as it could lead to another lockdown.
