The Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians says medical approval has not yet been given to administer COVID-19 vaccines to children under the age of 18 years in the country.
Speaking during a media briefing, Secretary Dr. Channa de Silva said parents should pay more attention to children who have contracted the coronavirus.
Dr. de Silva said there is a decline in the number of children being brought to hospitals for treatment for the virus since its spread has been controlled to a certain extent and due to the programme introduced to treat and monitor patients at home.
He said however patients who are exhibiting symptoms and require medical observation must be treated at hospitals.
Dr. de Silva said special discussions are being held on getting medical approval to vaccinate children adding potential side effects of the vaccine are also being looked into at present.
