The first Omicron coronavirus variant case detected in Sri Lanka has been identified as a traveller from Nigeria who has not taken any vaccine doses.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, the Director of the Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said the Sri Lankan returnee arrived in the island on the 24th of November and was tested at the Katunayake International Airport as per existing health protocol.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said a PCR test was conducted since the individual was not vaccinated.
He said they identified that the individual has been infected by the Omicron variant today after the conduct of the genetic sequencing test.
He said the individual remains in isolation. Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said necessary measures have been taken to prevent further infections.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara also said the country is better prepared to face a new coronavirus variant.
