New health guidelines have been issued granting permission to conduct religious ceremonies in places of worship.
Accordingly, a maximum of 50 devotees can participate in activities in Temples on Poya Days and during other special ceremonies.
Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena said up to a maximum of 50 devotees can also attend religious ceremonies conducted in Kovils, Mosques and Churches.
Meanwhile, Dr. Asela Gunawardena said they have received several complaints regarding violation of health guidelines during wedding ceremonies and other events.
He said permission has been granted for only 50 attendees at a wedding.
Dr. Gunawardena noted however they have received complaints that some hotels had housed 150, 200 and even 300 guests at night and conducted weddings.
He said during such events, mask mandates and other health guidelines have been disregarded.
Dr. Asela Gunawardena noted that this is a disappointing development which will pave the way for the spread of the virus.
The Director General of Health Services said the public will have to pay the price for such actions.
