More unions raise concerns over the reduction in PCR tests

The All Ceylon Medical Officers’ Association says the main reason for the decrease in coronavirus cases in recent days is owing to the reduction in PCR tests.

Speaking to media, Secretary of the Union Dr. Jayantha Bandara said although a large number of coronavirus infected individuals are in the society at present, due to the reduction in tests, the daily numbers appears to be low.

Dr. Bandara noted that they requested the government to conduct 2.5 to 3 million PCR tests within a short time frame and identify all positive cases and isolate them to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus genuinely.

He said although vaccination is required, authorities cannot disregard other best practices and expect to end the crisis.

Dr. Jayantha Bandara noted that, at present the number of PCR tests has been reduced while the quarantine and isolation process have been disregarded.

He said instead requests have been made to allow tourists to enter the country.

Dr. Jayantha Bandara said they are of the view that tourists should not be allowed in at the present juncture.

He said matters related to coronavirus virus mitigation must be handed over to experts in the field which will help the country come out of the crisis promptly.
