Minister Prasanna Ranatunga says in the event a decision is reached to impose a lockdown, he has proposed to the President to donate 75% of the salary of all Members of Parliament, 50% of the salary of state and private sector employees and 30% of the salary of minor workers during this period, excluding health workers.
The Minister made this proposal in a letter directed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Minister Ranatunga said if a lockdown is imposed, drawing a salary with the people’s taxes will be difficult task if true to one’s conscience.
The Minister added individuals who propose a lockdown have failed to provide solutions to the economic difficulties faced by the people, claiming that if the President announces a decision to close the country, a programme is needed to protect people who don’t draw a monthly salary.
Minister Ranatunga stated religious leaders, including the Maha Sangha, are involved in a propaganda campaign with some requesting a lockdown.
The Minister in his letter to the President also stated that he believes the President will reach a more logical and scientific decision pertaining to the demands for a lockdown
