The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the government must conduct an investigation and confirm if the facts mentioned in the President’s address to the nation last night, were accurate.
Speaking at a media briefing, MP SM Marikkar said the President’s speech called for the public to make sacrifices and that the people are ready to fight the coronavirus and save the country.
The MP raising suspicions said the government is preparing to deduct salaries of the state sector, using the lockdown as a reason.
MP Marikkar said the government printed money amounting to Rs.880 billion adding it has caused prices of goods to increase, and charged it was unfair to introduce pay cuts to employees who are already burdened with inflation.
Therefore the MP said it was unethical for the government to obtain money from the public, claiming that the government must instead deduct salaries of Members of Parliament.
He also called on the government to explain for how long it plans to provide the Rs.2,000 allowance promised to low income earners.
