Director of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital Dr. G Wijesuriya says the number of daily admissions of children contracting the coronavirus is on the rise.
Dr. Wijesuriya speaking to media said around 20 children are admitted to hospital daily with the virus, while four wards have been allocated to treat coronavirus positive children.
He said at present 80 children are being treated for the coronavirus.
However, the Director also noted that parents must remain vigilant as similar illnesses are spreading, including COVID-19, the viral fever, and dengue.
Dr, Wijesuriya said these illnesses cannot be differentiated as the symptoms are similar and causes fever, a cough, cold, throat pain, and headaches.
He claimed that adults face difficulties in determining which illness children have contracted and therefore urged that immediate medical assistance be sought and act according to a doctor’s advice.
Meanwhile, Dr. G Wijesuriya said if a child recovers from fever and contracts fever in 14-days again with symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, and nausea, immediate hospitalisation is required owing to the spread of another virus among children below the age of 18.
Dr. Wijesuriya said the virus worsens if medical attention is not sought.
