The Ministry of Health says the novel coronavirus spread cannot be contained merely by closing the country.
Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo today, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Hearth said although imposing travel restrictions will help the infection rate come down, they are seeking the public’s support to reduce the coronavirus numbers to manageable levels.
Dr. Herath noted that imposing lockdowns will not be beneficial if citizens continue to disregard health guidelines. He said it is evident that a large number of people are disregarding the curfew at present.
Dr. Hemantha Hearth requested the public to support the health authorities to help contain the virus. He also noted that officials must take steps to prevent people from gathering unnecessary in public places, at shopping malls and in public transportation services, when the quarantine curfew is lifted.
Dr. Herath said without taking such measures, it is futile to criticize the health authorities and their actions at a time when the world is dealing with a health emergency.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hemantha Hearth said the government is in possession of adequate medical oxygen to supply coronavirus infected persons and steps will be taken to procure more stocks if the demand increases.
He said they are sourcing from local supplies while oxygen stocks are also being imported on a regular basis.
Dr. Herath noted that oxygen concentrators that are used at bedsides are also sourced from various local producers to meet the demand.
