The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna says persons receiving a monthly salary are not faced with a major issue due to the country being closed.
Speaking during a media briefing General Secretary Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam said it is regrettable that the country has to be closed, adding that those earning a daily wage are the most affected.
He added five million such persons are faced with injustice through the imposition of curfew.
MP Kariyawasam said the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be completely mitigated by closing the country.
He noted lockdowns imposed in Australia had led the people to take to the streets, adding that lockdowns are mentally stressful to the public.
He claimed a majority of medical experts are of the stance that such measures are not successful to mitigate COVID-19.
The MP stated curfew should not be imposed based on the requests of trade unions and other factions, adding that it is regretful that expert opinion pertaining to COVID-19 is being expressed by those who lack proper knowledge on the matter.
On a separate note, MP Kariyawasam also charged that the letter directed by leaders of several parties affiliated with the government calling for the country to be closed, violated the collective responsibility of the Cabinet of Ministers.
He requested the President to look into the matter.
