State Minister of Co-operative Services Lasantha Alagiyawanna says a kilogram of raw sugar can be purchased from Sathosa outlets and Cooperatives for Rs.130 from Wednesday.
Speaking to media today, the State Minister said 45,000 metric tonnes of sugar is consumed monthly in the country.
He said 23,000 tonnes of the sugar is allocated for public consumption, while the balance is allocated for other production activities.
State Minister Alagiyawanna added Sri Lanka’s daily sugar consumption amounts to 1,500 metric tonnes.
The State Minister claimed the significant increase in prices of rice and sugar is unfair to consumers.
He assured the prices were not influenced by global price fluctuations.
Therefore the State Minister noted decisions will be taken over the course of next week, in order to control the rising cost of daily essentials.
