The Public Health Inspectors Union says three monks who visited the Medical Office of Health in Kekirawa in order to obtain the Sinopharm vaccine, have assaulted the PHI officer in charge of the area.
The assault was carried out by a monk who claimed to be a coordinating secretary of the Prime Minister and two other monks.
Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said the venerable have been arrested.
He said the incident was reported around 1:15 last afternoon, when the venerable had visited the MOH for their second Sinopharm jab.
Rohana said a vaccination centre was not operated by the Kekirawa MOH yesterday.
He added the PHI officer had explained that opening up one vial would result in a wastage as it is used to inoculate five individuals.
However the PHI Chairman said the venerable who failed to understand the facts assaulted the PHI officer, who is currently hospitalised with injuries.
He expressed hope that the Kekirawa Police will take due legal action.
Upul Rohana urged the public visiting vaccination centres to refrain from behaving in an unruly manner and inconveniencing officials.
He noted that the vaccination drive is underway in a successful manner, highlighting that the number of coronavirus deaths and cases have witnessed a significant reduction as of late.
