Island-wide quarantine curfew currently in place has been extended till 4am on the 6th of September.
The decision has been taken during a meeting of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 held under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat. Island-wide quarantine curfew was imposed at midnight on the 20th of August following a spike in coronavirus cases and deaths.
Curfew was scheduled to be lifted at 4am on Monday.
Meanwhile, Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella said following an observation that citizens have not properly adhered to quarantine regulations, a decision has been taken to impose restrictions on movement while encouraging people to work from home.
Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva said existing regulations will remain in place until the 6th of September.
He said essential services and other sectors exempted from curfew regulations can continue to function during the lockdown period.
