The National Trade Union Centre says a government which continues to put the people’s lives at risk at a time the COVID-related death toll has exceeded 10,000 and over 3,000 infections are reported daily can be seen in the country at present.
Speaking during a media briefing National Organizer of the Centre Wasantha Samarasinghe said the government has imposed curfew for a week and questioned what the result was.
He added PCR and rapid antigen tests have been reduced to reduce case numbers, stating however 100-200 people succumb to the virus daily.
Samarasinghe said the government is claiming it doesn’t want to close the country to build the economy, adding however that the present administration is engaged in a cheap attempt to provide perks to its close associates at a time the people are severely burdened by the pandemic.
He added the government has issued Gazettes, while allowing its associates to gain profits from essential food items.
Samarasinghe claimed however the government is not taking steps to provide concessions to the public including to those who were self-employed and contract workers of factories.
He stated the government has issued Gazettes to provide the package of goods worth Rs.10,000 for COVID-19 patients, only to low-income families, and the Rs.2,000 allowance only for persons who lost their income.
He added however that all persons who are unable to go out have lost their income at present, and are starving.
Samarasinghe said while the government is being urged to restore normalcy in the country, it is killing time and disregarding advice by health authorities.
