The Hotel Workers Centre says they will launch an island wide protest campaign, if the government fails to provide a Rs.15,000 allowance to hospitality sector employees who have lost livelihoods due to the coronavirus.
Speaking at a protest in Dickwella, National Organiser of the Center, Jayalath Ranasinghe said more than 500,000 hospitality sector employees have been burdened by the coronavirus pandemic.
He added a decline in tourism began after the Easter Sunday attacks in 2019, and progressed gradually.
However, Ranasinghe said progress was halted by the pandemic, affecting families of all hospitality sector employees.
He stressed the Center informed the Ministers of Tourism and Labour, Prime Minister and President along with many other responsible parties in writing over these issues, and also requested an audience with them to reach solutions.
However, the Hotel Workers Centre said they have been ignored and therefore have decided to not be patient and protest for their demands.
