The Family Health Bureau says an increase in hospitalizations of expectant women has been observed during the past three weeks.
Speaking to media at the Health Promotion Bureau today, Specialist Dr Sanjeewa Godakanda said 18 expectant women have succumbed to the coronavirus so far in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Godakanda revealed that expectant women were prone to higher health complications due to coronavirus, while the probability of them needing treatment at Intensive Care Units is five times higher.
He also said there is a higher risk of the fetus also being prone to complications such as breathing issues.
Dr. Godakanda pointed out that a higher risk of death for expectant women persists as well.
He attributed the increase in hospitalizations of expectant women on the free movement of people after relaxing travel restrictions.
