Health authorities have reiterated the importance of strictly adhering to health guidelines during the festive period, especially with the detection of cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country.
Speaking to NewsRadio, the Director of Technical Services of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anwar Hamdani noted that if the general public failed to strictly adhere to health guidelines, the country could once again endure difficulties experienced during previous COVID-19 waves.
He said at present, 600 to 700 coronavirus cases and between 20 to 35 COVID-related deaths are being reported daily while nearly 350 persons are being discharged from hospital after recovering.
Dr. Anwar Hamdani noted that the COVID-19 risk still persists and maintaining a cautious approach is of utmost importance.
Dr. Hamdani said traditionally during the festive period, the public movement increases and people are engaged in various activities.
He noted the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly across the world at present and certain muted strains could also be detected.
Dr. Anwar Hamdani stressed irrespective of the variant, every individual must take necessary precautions and by adhering to health guidelines, every citizen can individually prevent from being exposed to COVID-19 and also help reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Dr. Anwar Hamdani also noted that approval has been granted to administer the booster shot in the country.
He therefore requested the public to obtain the booster jab immediately.
Dr. Hamdani said the booster shot will provide additional protection against new variants and prevent people from being seriously ill.
He said it has been proven through studies that the booster will reduce hospitalizations and people will less likely be in intensive care.
Dr. Anwar Hamdani noted the public will receive opportunities to go on trips and enjoy leisure activities in future adding if individuals failed to adhere to guidelines or not take the necessary vaccine dose, then it could lead to unfortunate incidents.
He said therefore individuals should fulfill their duties and safeguard the country and rest of the citizens.
