The Ceylon Teachers Union says the government has failed to establish schools as a healthy place.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kandy today, President of the Union Priyantha Fernando said if this trend continues, an environment will be created in schools where examinations cannot be held.
Fernando said schools will be closed again due to the lack of a stringent programme by the government.
He said the government has failed to assure parents, and children that the school environment is safe.
Fernando added a dangerous coronavirus situation has been created within schools.
He said the government can still intervene and address this concern.
He added health authorities have directed reports to the Ministry of Education, and COVID-19 committees in this regard with most reports disregarded.
Fernando warned the concern lies in continuing school functions while a school’s cluster could emerge in the future due to short-sighted decisions of the government.
