Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says the government has made plans to administer vaccines against COVID-19 to children over 12 years under several phases.
Speaking during the opening of the Southern Province children’s COVID-19 treatment unit at the Hambantota Hospital via video technology the Prime Minister said children with other complications will be prioritised during the vaccination drive.
Premier Rajapaksa said a proposal has been tabled to appoint a specialist doctor for all 99 educational zones in the country to protect children.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said the programme will be launched under several phases after teachers, principals and non-academic staff are vaccinated.
The Premier stressed vaccinations are the only solution at present to prevent loss of life and the spread of the virus.
The Prime Minister noted unpopular decisions may have to be reached for the greater good, adding that strict travel restrictions were imposed for everyone’s safety.
