The Government Medical Officers Association says the number of coronavirus cases and deaths increasing daily, following the easing of travel restrictions, is a cause for concern.
Assistant Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Naveen De Zoysa speaking at a media briefing said it is important to obtain the booster shot.
Dr. de Zoysa said complete public support has not been extended to COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
He claimed that individuals not being fully vaccinated or immunity in vaccinated individuals waning are reasons behind the number of infections and deaths increasing.
Dr. de Zoysa said while frontline workers have received the booster jab, individuals with illnesses and other complications, persons above 60 years, and the immune-compromised must be prioritised when administering the third dose.
He added the government and the Ministry of Health alone cannot prevent the spread of the virus adding that the public too has a significant role to play.
Dr. de Zoysa said in general when schools reopen after holidays, the spread of viruses and infections are higher as students gather in one place, adding that the coronavirus too similarly spreads.
Therefore, he highlighted the need to adhere to health regulations at all times and called for school van and bus drivers to ensure they are vaccinated in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
