The Government Medical Officers’ Association says the number of daily COVID deaths recorded is increasing at a suspiciously high rate.
Speaking to media, Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said the number of daily deaths reported does not bear a co-relation to the number of cases reported in Sri Lanka.
He warned the public to be aware of hygiene in the coming days.
Despite the number of daily coronavirus cases being reported between 100 and 150, Dr. Haritha Aluthge revealed that the actual number is much higher.
He attributed this variance to the limited capacity for testing within the local healthcare system.
The Doctor stressed that close to four or five deaths from the coronavirus are being reported on a daily basis.
Dr. Haritha Aluthge suggested that a difference between the mortality rate and the daily infections would only suggest that all patients are not being diagnosed through the healthcare system.
The Doctor also commented on the new strain of coronavirus spreading around the world, and warned that the present situation is very risky.
He mentioned that experts have suggested how the new strain is spreading at a rate five times faster than the old strain.
Looking at statistical data, the doctor pointed out that the spreading rate of the new strain was higher, and added that data was insufficient to make further predictions.
Dr. Haritha Aluthge also mentioned that the death rate could climb, due to the increased daily infections of the virus.
