The Government Medical Officers Association has questioned as to why the vaccination of individuals between the 18 to 30 age group was hurriedly launched.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Assistant Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Naveen de Zoysa said the health unit has lost control of the vaccination programme.

Dr. de Zoysa said reasons behind the selection of the group that were vaccinated, the area in which the vaccines were administered and other crucial details have not been informed to the Medical Officers of Health or medical professionals.

He charged that the programme was not approved and therefore questioned how it was enforced and whether the Health Secretary was aware of plans to vaccinate individuals between 18 and 30 years of age.

Dr. de Zoysa claimed the Director and Deputy Director General of Health Services are helpless owing to such arbitrary decisions.

Dr. Naveen de Zoysa added the Secretary of the Ministry of Health is also taking action on the baseless decisions reached by the Epidemiology Unit.

He also questioned if unscientific decisions are backed by the Health Secretary.

He noted how vaccinations should happen, the vaccinations of the elderly, reducing COVID-deaths, lifting the country out of this turmoil and many decisions were  reached at discussions held under the patronage of the President and specialists.

However the GMOA representative added that sufficient vaccine doses are not being issued at present to hospitals and authorised individuals claiming that MOH are severely inconvenienced.
