Health officials say it has been scientifically observed that the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant is frequently affected by genetic mutations.
According to the Ministry of Health there is a risk of an individual contracting the COVID-virus multiple times due to genetic mutations.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau today, Specialist at the Colombo Medical Research Institute Dr. Nadeeka Janage said fortunately the mutations do not increase transmissibility.
Dr. Janage said it must be understood that the Omicron variant does not remain stagnant, and keeps spreading due to mutations adding it also carries the risk of creating more variants.
He said this has been unanimously acknowledged by scientists around the world.
On a separate note, Dr. Nadeeka Janage said according to the present situation one booster dose is sufficient for an average individual.
Dr. Janage added immunity created by the booster jab will last a year.
He however claimed the situation may change depending on new variants adding further decisions on another booster jab will be taken accordingly.
Dr. Janage stated immunity of those suffering from pre-existing conditions may not improve with the three COVID-vaccine doses adding recommendations will be tabled in future as to whether such individuals require another booster dose.
