Health authorities say the systematic extinction of the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus from the world due to the rapid spread of the Omicron strain is a positive development.
They say the transmissibility and the death rate are much higher than the Omicron variant.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, Director of the Health Promotion Bureau Dr. Ranjith Batuwantudawa said it is confirmed that complications from the Omicron variant are much milder.
He said according to reports from the United States and United Kingdom, a large number of people have been infected by the Omicron variant.
Dr. Batuwantudawa said based on research conducted by the University of Jayewardenepura, experts project 12 percent of new COVID cases will be linked to the Omicron variant.
Dr. Ranjith Batuwantudawa however noted that the public should not disregard the impact of the Omicron variant.
He said data related to elderly population and those with comorbidities are inadequate to come to a firm conclusion.
Dr.Batuwanthudawa said therefore such groups must remain extra cautious.
