State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and Covid Disease Control Sudarshini Fernandopulle says she is of the view that the current island-wide lockdown should be extended for at least two more weeks.
State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle said the number of COVID-19 cases has not decreased adequately and therefore imposing restrictions for two more weeks is essential to bring down the numbers.
Speaking to media, the State Minister said although nearly 5,000 coronavirus cases are detected daily, according to experts, nearly 50,000 infected individuals could be in the society, at present.
She added due to the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant, the number of cases had increased sharply.
State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle said during an expert study conducted in January, it was determined that the positivity rate based on PCR tests was 14 percent in Colombo but nine times more cases were in the society.
She said following the emergence of the Delta coronavirus variant, the number of undetected cases in the society is evidently high.
The State Minister said therefore strict travel restrictions must be imposed to bring down the numbers to manageable levels.
