Minister Dullas Alahapperuma says they are hopeful of reopening schools promptly by completing the vaccination of children between the ages of 15 and 19.
Speaking during an event in Matara today, Minister Alahapperuma said it is unfortunate that schools have been closed for nearly one and half years and children are being held hostage at home.
The Minister welcomed yesterday’s decision to vaccinate the children between the ages of 15 and 20 years promptly.
Commenting on the situation in Matara, Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said all youth between 20 and 30 years have been vaccinated while only 69,000 children between the ages of 15 and 19 years are due to be vaccinated in the district.
He said they are hopeful of administering the vaccine to children in GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level classes in the month of October and resume academic activities in schools.
He said it is unfortunate that children are facing this health emergency, but noted that the time has come to take the next step.
Minister Alahapperuma also claimed the public should not be fearful of the COVID-19 disease which has caused huge distress among the people.
He said everyone should follow the safety measures but should not be fearful of the novel coronavirus.
