The Government Medical Officers’ Association says it has been observed that the number of infections with the Delta variant in the Colombo District and the Western Province has increased.
Speaking to media in Colombo, Assistant Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Samantha Ananda said as a result the number of COVID-19 cases identified in the Western Province is on the rise.
He noted the public must pay special attention to the matter, adding that vaccinations only provide protection.
Dr. Ananda stated a large number of health workers have contracted the virus, adding a majority of them have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
He added the situation is similar with health workers of all hospitals including at national hospitals and Children’s Hospital.
He stated nearly 40 children at the Children’s Hospital have contracted the coronavirus, while around eight of them are on the waiting list to receive beds.
Dr. Ananda added therefore facilities are limited for children who have contracted COVID-19.
He stated the situation is similar at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases as well.
Dr. Samantha Ananda urged the public to follow necessary steps to ensure they don’t spread the virus in society or at homes.
