Health officials have advised persons infected with the coronavirus to only take medication for their specific symptoms.

They urged COVID-19 patients to refrain from taking antibiotics without seeking medical advice.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau this afternoon, Consultant Physician Dr. Priyankara Jayawardena said medication is determined based on the nature and severity of the symptoms.

Dr. Jayawardena said individuals who contract the virus after receiving all three doses of the COVID-vaccine are most likely to suffer from a short-term fever.

He said it is well known that bed rest is the best solution for a common fever while adequate levels of liquids must be consumed to avoid dehydration.

He added Paracetamol must be consumed as required.

He said if an individual is suffering from excess nasal drainage they can obtain nasal drops while those suffering from a cough should obtain Chlorphenamine or other relevant medication suitable for a phlegm or cough.

Dr. Jayawardena said an inhaler can be recommended in the event an individual is wheezing or suffering from breathing difficulties.

He said antibiotics will only be recommended in the event of a bacterial infection after contracting the coronavirus.
