Experts warn that there is a tendency of persons who contract COVID-19 getting diabetes, post-COVID.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Consultant Endocrinologist at the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Manilka Sumanatilleke noted that COVID-19 patients may get diabetes, even if no individual in the family has diabetes, or they don’t have any other risk factor including being obese.
He said following the conduct of tests, experts have determined that if a diabetic patient is infected with the virus through the respiratory system, it enters organs including the heart, faster than in any other individual.
He added therefore there is a higher chance of health complications in patients with diabetes.
Dr. Sumanatilleke noted they succumb after experiencing sudden heart attacks and being paralyzed, in addition to respiratory issues.
He reiterated therefore diabetic patients are at a higher risk, due to the virus.
Dr. Sumanatilleke further said according to latest statistics, it was observed that persons who contracted COVID-19, including persons aged between 20 and 25, have diabetes, several months after contracting the virus.
Meanwhile Consultant Community Physician Dr. Shanthi Gunawardana said the public can detect if they have diabetes or other non-communicable diseases ahead, by visiting ‘Suwa Diri’ centres located at hospitals across the country.
She said ‘Suwa Diri’ centres are operational at rural hospitals, primary medical centres and district hospitals.
She noted ‘Suwa Diri’ centres conduct free tests to identify non-communicable diseases, and provide necessary medical advice.
Dr. Gunawardana said persons can check their sugar and cholesterol levels at such centres.
She claimed although the service is provided free of charge, the public is not making use of the facility.
Dr. Gunawardana stressed there is a high risk of contracting non-communicable diseases including diabetes and heart related illnesses, after contracting COVID-19.
She therefore urged the public to make use of ‘Suwa Diri’ centres.
