The Association of Medical Specialists says COVID-fatalities would not have increased to the current figure if the vaccination drive was initiated earlier and the vaccinations of those above the age of 60 years was expedited and completed.

Executive Committee Member of the Association, Dr. Asoka Gunaratne said it was clear that the majority of coronavirus complications and deaths were among individuals above the age of 60 years.

Dr. Gunaratne said the vaccination drive was initiated to vaccinate persons above 60 years of age adding however the age limit was lowered to 30 years and above due to reasons unknown.

He said there is a large group of citizens above the age of 30, that led to a delay in vaccinating individuals above 60 years of age.

Dr. Gunaratne said wards in hospitals that don’t treat COVID patients, have also reached capacity in addition to hospitals designated to treat COVID cases.
