The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka says a large number of COVID-19 cases are being detected within schools at present.
Speaking to media in Puttalam, Chairman Upul Rohana said attention must be directed towards school children in enclosed spaces and smaller classrooms.
He added a large number of cases are being recorded from classrooms with a lot of students and insufficient space, which could lead to clusters.
The PHI Union Chairman stressed such a situation can be avoided to a certain extent if parents and teachers remain vigilant regarding school children.
Rohana further said infections are also being reported from weddings, public gatherings and state and private sector institutions.
He noted failure to act in a responsible manner will lead to a disaster after the next two weeks.
He said it will push the country towards a situation the health system cannot bear with a large number of cases being reported.
Upul Rohana said there is an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in several areas across the country.
He noted although there is only a slight increase in the cases that are reported daily, it is apparent at ground level that the number of unreported infections is very high.
The PHI Union Chairman stressed those who have not received the vaccine or are delaying the vaccination are showing more critical symptoms.
Rohana added although it is said that the Omicron variant will not lead to critical symptoms, several persons are being hospitalised.
He stressed the people have a responsibility to protect themselves and their loved ones.
