Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella says the booster shot or the third dose of a coronavirus vaccine will be administered six months after receiving the second dose.
Speaking to media in Kandy today, the Minister said the World Health Organization and other institutions have issued directives for a third booster shot.
The government decided to administer a dose of the Pfizer vaccine as a booster shot to fully vaccinated individuals above 20 years of age.
Minister Rambukwella said the stock of vaccines required for this purpose have already been ordered adding that priority will be given to frontline workers when administering the booster vaccines.
He added 14.5 million Pfizer vaccine doses have been ordered to be administered as a third jab adding that the consignments will arrive in stages.
The Health Minister said between 11-12 million citizens above the age of 30 and around 3.6 million individuals between the ages of 20 and 30 will be eligible for the vaccine shot.
