The Family Health Bureau says 67 children have succumbed to COVID-19 in the country.
Speaking during a media briefing, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Kapila Jayaratne said among them 13 had died while at home.
Dr. Jayaratne noted that 95 percent of the deaths among children occurred owing to the delays in admitting them to a hospital after detecting symptoms of COVID-19. He said a majority died due to COVID pneumonia.
Dr. Kapila Jayaratne is of the view that due to the negative sentiments towards the health system, children were not admitted to hospitals even after testing positive for COVID-19.
He said some are fearful of hospital care and refrained from seeking professional health.
Consultant Community Physician Dr. Kapila Jayaratne noted that a large number of children who got admitted after contracting COVID-19 received excellent care at hospitals and recovered completely.
He said specialist doctors are dedicating themselves to provide excellent care to patients and therefore urged the public to have faith in the country’s health system.
