The Health Promotion Bureau says 85% of the COVID-19 deaths reported till the 13th of August, amounting to 6,985, were of individuals who suffered from underlying illnesses.
Director General of the Bureau Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa speaking at a media briefing today said the information was uncovered through an analysis conducted by the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Batuwanthudawa said of the 6,985 fatalities, 2,261 individuals or 53%, suffered from diabetes and related illnesses.
He added 2,202 individuals, 52%, suffered from high blood pressure while 1,001 who succumbed to the virus, 24% among the victims, had preexisting heart related illnesses.
Dr. Batuwanthudawa added 800 persons among the fatalities, or 18% of the victims, suffered from chronic kidney diseases while 445 persons, 10% of the fatalities, had preexisting bronchial asthma.
