Another 41 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in Sri Lanka.
Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology at Sri Jayewardenepura University, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said total cases have increased to 45.
He said lab tests at the University declared 41 new cases of Omicron variant.
He said a majority of them are close contacts of persons who arrived from overseas.
Dr. Jeewandara urged the public to obtain the booster dose against the virus immediately.
When questioned by media on further clarification on the origins of the cases, he said the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health is conducting further investigations into the collected samples.
Dr. Jeewandara said they were able to identify these cases due to procedures including genome sequencing established by the Health Ministry.
