The Association of Health Professionals says 4% of daily arrivals at Sri Lankan airports are positive for the Omicron coronavirus variant.
Elaborating on coronavirus positive cases detected during the month of January, President of the Association Ravi Kumudesh said it is important that PCR testing is conducted on all arrivals at the Bandaranaike International Airport in order to prevent the situation worsening.
Kumudesh noted the risk of the Omicron variant destroying the country remained a possibility as testing of arrivals is at a standstill.
He added that data within the report may not be 100% accurate as the process to detect positive infections is inefficient.
Kumudesh said a majority of individuals leaving the country for overseas, have been reported as COVID-positive upon testing.
Therefore, he called on authorities to recommence on-arrival PCR testing.
