The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka has warned that the coronavirus will spread rapidly if strict travel restrictions are not imposed once again.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said a majority of the health sector have also fallen victim to the virus. He also revealed that coronavirus related deaths and cases will increase exponentially in the near future.
Rohana pointed out that the ground level situation was very risky and dangerous, adding unusually high numbers are being reported from all districts.
The PHI Union Chairman said health authorities expect daily infections to increase in large numbers during the next two weeks, up to a point that that hospitals will be unable to handle.
He explained that PHI Union is overwhelmed with duties in the Gampaha District, where eight PHIs tested positive during the past few days.
Since health authorities are close to the breaking point Union Chairman Upul Rohana requested the support of people to curb the spread of the virus and called on authorities to impose travel restrictions.
Union Chairman Upul Rohana claimed that a decrease in total vaccinations is a reason for COVID-19 related death rates to increase.
When questioned by media over vaccination protection by the government, Rohana said a majority of Lankans have only received the first dose.
He claimed that only those inoculated with both doses could be considered as protected against the virus.
The PHI union Chairman also noted that fully vaccinated individuals testing positive for the virus only meant that they are carriers of it.
