The government says it expects a significant drop in the number of coronavirus cases and related fatalities by the end of September.

Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing today, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said Sri Lanka is nearing the completion of the final stages of a successful COVID-19 vaccination drive.

When questioned pertaining to the quarantine curfew, the Minister said the economy of the people must be considered including the private sector that contributes to the country’s economy.

Minister Pathirana claimed that many individuals have been affected by the quarantine curfew adding that therefore individuals in certain sectors such as agriculture, plantation and exports have been granted some relief to operate during the lockdown in order to make a living.

Minister Pathirana on a separate note said steps have been taken to promptly release the results of the 2020 Ordinary Level Examination.

He stated the matter was discussed at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers adding that necessary powers of releasing the O/Level results have been vested with the Minister of Education.

He said various proposals have been tabled informally pertaining to releasing the results adding the Education Minister will research these methods and act accordingly.
