State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Channa Jayasumana has urged the general public to remain cautious during the next five to six weeks, following a gradual increase in coronavirus cases.
Speaking to media in Colombo, State Minister Jayasumana said during the past two weeks, the COVID-19 infection rate has risen.
He said new cases have been detected from people who had recently visited places of worship and sites that hosted large groups for religious events.
State Minister Jayasumana said it is important that religious observances are conducted in private or with the participation of only close family members.
The State Minister said the government has re-opened schools, which is a progressive move but the increase in infection rates could lead to the closure of schools.
He said the efficacy of vaccines is also reducing and if the numbers continue to rise, it will impact the day-to-day affairs of the public.
State Minister Channa Jayasumana also said the public should be mindful of the situation since Sri Lanka experiences heavy rains during the months of November and December which lead to an increase in various illnesses including cold.
He said the behavior of the public will have a huge bearing on the COVID-19 numbers in the next few weeks.
