COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The couple who was arrested for abandoning their infant in a train at the Colombo Fort Railway station earlier this month, has been granted bail.
The order was issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. Court was informed by the attorneys representing the arrested couple that they will get married once they are released from remand custody.
Accordingly, the mother and the father of the infant, aged 25 and 26 were granted bail.
Meanwhile, on a request made by the Bandarawela probation officer, court ordered the infant be handed over to the couple.
The request was made upon considering the nutritional requirements of the infant.
Last Friday (10), the infant, who was born on the 25th of February, was found abandoned by passengers of Batticaloa-bound express train at Colombo Fort station.
Upon the discovery of the infant inside a restroom, railway authorities were called and the child was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
The 25-year-old mother of the infant was apprehended in Nayabedda, Bandarawela on the 10th of March, while the father, aged 26, was arrested in Koslanda on the 11th of this month.
Police said the father of the infant, who was employed in Dehiwala, had brought his partner to his place in Colombo after learning about her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, a special investigation was launched against the conduct of the Chief Inspector of the Bandarawela Police during the arrest and interrogation of the mother of the newborn who abandoned the infant inside a trade.
The Special Investigation Unit will conduct the probe on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.
The Police Media Division said officers will probe a series of events including the manner in which the mother was arrested and later interrogated by the Inspector, on account of her causing her discomfort.
A video of the relevant interrogation was widely circulated on mainstream and social media.
