Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thera has questioned the government pertaining to the reason behind wanting to conduct the Provincial Council Election, at a time that an election cannot be held in the country amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, Sobhitha Thera said the reason is clear with over Rs.100 billion being allocated to regional authorities, through the 2022 Budget.
The Thera noted the public has been further burdened with the increase in prices of goods adding the country’s economic situation is unsuitable to conduct an election.
The Thera charged local authorities of acting as if Sri Lanka is a provincial state of India at present.
Sobhitha Thera questioned if the Provincial Council Election is being held due to influence from India.
