The Coroners’ Association of Sri Lanka says they are severely burdened due to circulars issued by the Ministry of Health regarding the conduct of the post-mortem examination of individuals who succumb to COVID-19 while undergoing quarantine at home.
Coroners claimed the circulars have led to delays in handing over bodies of COVID-19 victims to relatives and the pile-up of bodies at some hospitals.
The Association requested the Health Ministry to issue practical directives when issuing circulars regarding coroners duties.
Speaking during a media briefing in Hatton Media Secretary of the Association Mohamed Fazir said coroners are inconvenienced as the latest circular issued in this regard states the remains of COVID-19 patients who succumb at their residence must be directed to a Judicial Medical Officer for the post-mortem examination.
He claimed therefore there are irregularities in the circulars issued by the Health Ministry.
